Daylily Sale

Every July and August the previous owners were famous for their annual daylily sale.  To be honest, a year ago I would not be able to tell you what a daylily was.  I am so glad I know now, because they are absolutely gorgeous.

We decided we would sell some this year, so I am learning a lot very quickly.  Keep reading to find the answers to some FAQ about daylilies.

FAQs on Daylilies - Source: American Daylily Society

Q: Why are daylilies so popular?

A:   Daylilies are very hearty.  They are able to survive with very little care and in a wide range of climates.  They are drought tolerant and adaptable to various soil and light conditions.  Plus, they are available in so many colors and varieties of shapes and sizes.

Q: Where is the best place to plant daylilies?

A:  Most daylilies do best in full sun, but the red and purple can benefit from partial shade in the hottest part of the day.  They do not withstand the sun as well as the lighter colors.  Ideally the soil you plant them in can hold sufficient moisture, yet is still well drained.  Daylilies may not do well near or under trees that compete for moisture and nutrients.

Q: How do I plant daylilies?

A: Make sure your plants are clean and healthy before planting.  Dig a hole at least 1 feet deep and larger than the root mass.  Make a mount in the center of the hole and set the plant on top with the roots spread on all sides of the mound.  Do not set the crown more than 1 inch below the surface of the soil.  The crown is where the foliage and the roots join.  Work the soil around and between the roots as you cover the plant.  Firm the soil and water well.  Make sure there are no air pockets.  After the water has soaked in, finish filling in the soil and leave a slight depression around the plant.   That way when you water in the future, the water will not run off away from the plant.  Make sure to space daylilies at least 18-24 inches apart from each other on each side.

Q: How do you care for daylilies?

A:  Water, supplied in sufficient amounts, almost certainly increases the number and size of daylily blooms.  Watering is most important in spring when the plants are making scapes and buds, and in the summer during the bloom season.  Daylilies benefit more from deep watering, which reaches 8 to 10 inches into the soil, than from a succession of brief, surface waterings.  Overhead watering and watering in the evening can cause spots on the next day's blooms.  Be careful not to over water.  Mulching improves the soil and helps retain moisture.  Remove the day's blooms either at the end of the day or the beginning of each day.  Remove dead, damaged or diseased foliage in spring and during growing season.  Once all the flowers have bloomed, you can clip off the scape within a few inches of the ground.  The scape is the leafless stalk which bears the flowers.

Will You Be My Bridesmaid? Gift Guide!

IMG_6953.jpg

Even before I got engaged, or before I was dating anyone for that matter, I would always think about who the girls would be that would stand by my side for my big day.  When it came time to officially ask them to be my bridesmaids I was beyond excited!  I needed to ask them in the perfect way!!  What better way than a "Will you be my bridesmaid?" gift box.  It's the least I could do knowing how much money and time they were about to spend on me.

Next step was deciding what to put in this gift box.  Generally, when gift box giving I like to have what I call an "anchor".  This is a larger gift that takes up a good amount of space in the gift box and ties the gift box together.

I used Sugarfina "Will you be my bridesmaid?" candy set as my anchor.  I am obsessed with Sugarfina.  Candy has never looked so good and I always feel like I am giving something significant when I include a sugarfina cube in my gift to someone.  This set specifically has three cubes.  The first cube says "Will you" and is their signiture Champagne Bears.  The second cube says "be my" and is "pink diamonds".  The third cube says "Bridesmaid?" and is champagne bubbles.  Any bridesmaid would LOVE to receive one of these.  Plus you cannot beat the cute slider box with the outer sleeve.  Presentation on point!!

Next, I knew I needed something that said "bridesmaid" of course!  I thought the bridesmaid pouches I found were perfect!  The font, the color, the tassel all just did it for me!  And I knew they would do it for my girls as well.  :). TIP: Grab some monogram charms from Michaels.  Your girls are going to want to use them for lots of wedding events they will be at all together and you don't want them getting mixed up.  I have two girls with the same initial and I gave them each a different color gemstone additionally so that they could tell the difference!

Now for some pampering!!  Since they will be spending so much time on me, I thought I would force them to spend some time on themselves too!  Got to love a good bath bomb, so that was a clear choice.  I went with the "Celebrate Good Times" bath bomb.  The name was appropriate and the scent is to die for.  The ingredients are natural jojoba and olive oil, lemongrass essential oil, & milk bath.  Added bonus is that there is a surprise in the bath bomb!  I have to tell the secret because it's SO cool!  It is a multi-colored water-activated light.

I also included a sunflower mask sheet because they are so fun!  I loved the way the color worked with the rest of the items in the gift box.  Plus, these masks are fabulous!  They contains 12 seperate slices that can be used for spot treatment wherever you need nourishment!  You can use on your face, neck, arms or legs.

Lastly and probably the most necessary...I included a hangover shower shot!  Shower shots are made from essential oils, herbs and flowers that are handpicked from an island farm in Maine.  You drop these into the shower and the steam releasing the amazing scents.  This one is made with lemon, grapefruit, cedarwood, juniper, and lavender to help with head and tummy aches.  Perfect final touch to let the ladies know what they were in for ;)

Then, I put all these beautiful items in our "Will you be my bridesmaid?" boxes on a bed of crinkle!

I think my girls ADORED these boxes and the goodies that were inside.  I was so happy to hear about them using all the different items and seeing them use their bridesmaid pouch!

I have always been a dog lover, having grown up with two dogs at a time.  When my husband and I first moved in together naturally getting a dog was the clear next step in our relationship. (for me at least :p).  When we were on the way to look at wedding venues we randomly decided to check the pet finder app to see if there were any rescue pups available in the area we were driving through.  Sure enough we saw the cutest little angel pup and the location was in a town we were passing through.  I just had to meet this little guy!!

We contacted the agency and they were able to meet with us right at the time we were passing through their town.  We arrive and we were a little confused.  It was a small house that was marked with nothing but a house number - no sign referencing the agency.  We weren't sure if we were at the right place.  We knocked on the door and we were greeted by little "Randy".  (That was his name at the time.). He was just the sweetest thing.  So little, a bit clumsy, and very loving!  It was love at first sight!!

We were also expecting there to be multiple puppies there.  We saw a bunch on pet finder listed with the same address so we thought they would all be there.  To me I didn't matter, I knew I had found my puppy.  Honestly, John and I really hadn't talked much through the realities of having a puppy.  We really only went to one rescue previously.  The other rescue was like night and day to this one.  I asked to hold a puppy and they immediately snapped back with, "do you have a full time job?"  In my head I thought they wanted the answer to be "yes" so that I would financially be able to support the puppy.  I found out very quickly that was not the answer they were looking for.  They wouldn't let me hold the puppy.  They didn't want me to get attached if I could not be at home with the puppy to take care of him.

Since that experience, John and I were so busy with planning our wedding that we really hadn't discussed it much.  I think it worked out best the way it happened, because otherwise we may have had too much time to think about the practicalities.  Having this one cute little puppy in a room that we felt immediate love for made it impossible to say no.  We took Carter with us that very day and he is growing into such a fine young gentleman!

Here he is on his drive home!  He was SO SMALL!  We were thinking "Oh Shi*, what did we do?!?!"  As much as we loved him, we were scared about doing all the right things for Carter.

Oh my goodness!  He was such a little STUD!!!!  This was the morning after his first night at the house.  It was down pouring and we had no idea when he would need to go to the bathroom, so poor John was taking him out all through the night in the rainstorm.

With all this said, because of my love for pets and Carter I knew I needed to add a pet section for the store!  I call it Carter's Corner!  Well I never did until I had to come up with a name for this blog post...nice ring to it though, right?!  Keep going to see some of the pet items we carry!

This picture cracks me up!  It was when we first set up the section.  I had him in the store and didn't even realize that it would be torture for him to have toys that he couldn't play with!  Since this, we have expanded the section and moved it into another room.  Carter has yet to steal a toy!  He's such a good boy.  :)
