Hummingbirds 101

If you are new to the idea of birding or simply do not like the mess of typical bird feeders, a perfect place to start is with hummingbird feeders. They are in Maine from about May-September and they are just stunning! It’s so nice during the summer months to sit outside and enjoy a refreshing drink while taking in the views of the hummingbirds. The best part is that they are not afraid to get up close, so you can have a feeder right by your house!

How to get started:

First you will need to select a hummingbird feeder.

We sell a variety of feeders, but there are a lot of factors to consider.  Here is a chart of the features of our top feeders, so you can get an idea of what each has to offer and can find the best feeder for your needs!

Here’s a closer look at each of these and we will tell you why we love them!

Glass Sphere Hummingbird Feeder

Why we love:

This one is great because you can take the top off after the hummingbird season is over and use it for mealworms.  People love that it is glass and that you can buy multiples and hang them from eachother to feed lots of hummingbirds!

Vintage Glass Hummingbird Feeder

Why we love:

This feeder is a favorite because of it's antique/vintage look.  Although it is lacking a lot of key features, you have the ability to add on most of what may be missing!

Ultra Hummingbird Feeder

Why we love:

Bees can be a problem for some.  In certain areas you could be in the clear for a month until they start swarming.  They can be tough to deal with and the nectar guards that come with this feeder definitely help.  They have a flexible membrane that will open only with the beak of a hummingbird.

Why we love:

What could be better than having the hummingbirds come right up to your window without you having to even leave the house?  The build in ant moat feature is great so you won't have to deal with the pesky ants!

Dome Covered Hummingbird Feeder

Why we love:

By itself a protective dome is $21.99, so if you are planning on making your feeder rainproof this is the way to go when it comes to value!  It also is extremely important to keep your hummingbird feeder clean to keep them visiting your feeder, so it is great to have the cleaning brush included as well!

Accessories To Consider

Next Steps…

You’ve picked out your feeder and accessories, now what?!

You need to decide if you want to make your nectar yourself or buy a premade nectar mix.

Nectar Recipe:

4 Cups of Water

1 Cup Sugar

Boil water first, then add sugar.

Store in refrigerator.

Clean and replace nectar every 3-5 days.  Nectar in fridge will last 7-10 days.

You want to wait until the liquid cools before placing in the feeder.  This is where I run into problems, since I am always on the go and honestly don’t think of it the night before to get it ready.  So I supplement with a premade mixture I can just pour right in.  We sell the below for $7.99.  I just love that it’s ready to use and no preparation is needed!

Once you choose what nectar is right for you, then you are ready to go!  I put out my feeder at the end of April, just to be sure I don’t miss them!  Make sure you clean out the nectar every 3-5 days even if they don’t come yet.  If they come and have spoiled nectar, it is likely that they may not come back.  Good luck and enjoy!!
